Psycho Breaks (Deluxe)

Returning to a first album after several years means hearing your own music with experience you did not yet have when it was made. Psycho Breaks found a reason for that return through outside interest: the album caught the attention of a musician from a breaks circle close to All Out, and work began on a new sound for the old material. For a producer accustomed to judging his music quite critically, that interest already mattered in itself.

Not everything planned at the time came to fruition. But the work that had begun did not end there, and eventually led to Psycho Breaks (Deluxe), released in 2021. All Out returned most extensively to The Ravers, I Choose Noise and Massive Tone. The aim was not to remake them beyond recognition: their original structures and characteristic sounds remained, while the studio experience gained since then made it possible to work more carefully with music once considered finished.

The way of listening to the material changed as well. The original Psycho Breaks consisted of twelve tracks mixed into a single continuous programme. Deluxe contains eight separate compositions, and the selection is different. Subconsciousness, Twisted Reaction and Into The Storm appear alongside Hot Damn (VIP Breaks) and Not Quite My Tempo. The latter came from a separate line of work connected with an archival vocal version featuring Richie Sykes material and remixes by Ivan Louchkin.

Deluxe is therefore not an attempt to replace the original album with a more modern version. It is a chance to return to part of that older music and continue working where, years later, there was still a desire to do more.

The return holds affection for the old material together with a demanding attitude towards it. The music still mattered, and that was precisely why more could once again be asked of it. In the end, the unrealised continuation of one story became a reason to complete another.
